How Fumigation (Tenting) Works

The fumigation process should generally only be considered as a “last resort” and should only be used if an infestation has gotten to the point where traditional treatment options will either take too long or run the risk of not working at all. This is most common with tiny but rapidly reproducing pests, such as fleas, flies, mosquitoes, or bedbugs. During this process, your home is sealed with a rubber canvas and its environment is loaded with a toxic gas that eventually eliminates all of the pests living in your home. This includes the space between your walls, in your flooring, and even in the attic over your head. However, because it takes time for air in these areas to change, this process can take several days to complete.

During the fumigation process, you will not be able to stay in your home. The gas used is toxic if ingested in large quantities, but it is extracted as much as possible before you’re given the all-clear to return home. Fumigation is a potentially hazardous operation, but your Yates-Astro professionals hold official certification to perform fumigations in a manner that ensures maximum safety.

Fumigation FAQ

Is fumigation safe?

When conducted by licensed and experienced professionals, fumigation is considered safe. However, it's important to follow all safety instructions provided by the pest control company. Occupants and pets must vacate the premises during the process, and proper aeration and clearance procedures must be followed before re-entry. Improper handling of fumigants can pose health risks, so it's crucial to rely on trained professionals for this type of pest control.

Do I have to wash everything after fumigation?

Yes, after fumigation, it's recommended to clean and wash any surfaces, dishes, utensils, and food preparation areas that may have come into contact with the fumigant. Additionally, it's a good idea to wash bedding, clothing, and other items that could have been exposed. This helps ensure that any residue from the fumigation process is safely removed. Always follow the specific instructions provided by the pest control company for post-fumigation cleaning.

If my neighbor's house is being tented, does that mean my home is at risk?

If your neighbor's house is being tented for fumigation, it does not necessarily mean your home is automatically at risk. However, it's always a good idea to take precautions. Ensure that your windows and doors are closed during the fumigation process to prevent any potential exposure to the fumigants. Additionally, follow any safety instructions provided by the pest control company and consult with them if you have concerns about your property's proximity to the fumigated area.
