How to Identify Earwigs

Earwigs are elongated, flattened insects ranging from about 1/4 inch to 1 inch long, with coloring that runs from pale or reddish brown to nearly black. The easiest feature to spot is the pair of cerci, the pincer-like appendages at the rear of the abdomen. They’re thicker and curved on males, straighter and thinner on females.

These occasional invaders are nocturnal, so they feed at night and hide during the day in dark, damp spots: mulch, leaf litter, under stones, beneath boards, and around woodpiles. Indoors, they turn up in bathrooms, under sinks, and anywhere else moisture collects.

Common signs of earwig activity include:

• Live earwigs near foundations, thresholds, bathrooms, or other damp areas.
• Earwigs hiding beneath planters, landscaping materials, boxes, or stored items.
• Irregular holes in the leaves of garden plants.
• Small, dark droppings resembling grains of pepper.
